Heritage Week at the Maritime Centre - February 2009 - Presentations

Dr. Barry Gough

Approximately 35 members and guest were treated to a wonderful talk by well know author Barry Gough. His knowledge and expertise about the maritime history of this area was appreciated by all. Interesting tales of how and why British Columbia remained with Canada and did not become part of the United States kept everyone spellbound.
Details: The Collision of Empires in Northwest America", an authoritative historical work as entertaining as any wild west adventure! Dr. Barry Gough was founding director of Canadian Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. An author of many critically acclaimed books, he has been writing about the history of the Pacific Coast for almost four decades and is known for the authenticity of his work which has received international recognition.

Ryan Wahl

Seventy two individuals packed themselves into the maritime centre to hear a 4th generation Wahl discuss his family’s wooden boat building history.

Many of the individuals have owed Wahl boats in the past and some currently have a Wahl boat. A lot of stories where shared with the author about their experiences with their boats and his family. Pictures of boats from the past where shared with everyone. The friendly get together could have gone on for many more hours with many more stories being told.

Garett Ollander

A wonderful presentation with pictures of the Arctic and the Mackenzie river were shared by all in attendance. Many of those in the audience have never been to that area of the great white north so it was very educational to see how the huge barges and tugs move supplies around through the snow and ice.
