32nd Annual Wooden Boat Festival

The 2017 Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre Wooden Boat ‘Festival’, celebrating our maritime heritage will be held June 17-18, 2017.

This family friendly festival has lots to see and do. Vote for your favourite wooden boat, watch the steam bending, steam engine and knot tying demonstrations, take part in the Clam Chowder Contest, see how you do in the Brown Bag Dinghy races plus much more. On Sunday, June 18 register a team for the Fast & Furious Boat Building Challenge or come and watch this popular event. Check out all of the festival details below.

Registration

Registration is open to wooden boats up to 40’ in length. Replicaboats will also be considered.

Registration Fee: $40
Registration includes:

  • 1 ticket to the Salmon BBQ dinner on Saturday evening
  • 1 ticket to the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning
  • 1 ticket to participate in the Clam Chowder contest

Vessels will receive complimentary moorage at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

Fast & Furious Boat Building Challenge

The ever-popular Fast & Furious Boatbuilding Challenge is back. Round up your team, start gathering supplies and head to the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre on June 18, 2017. Here are the details:

  • Who: Teams of 2 to 4 people
  • What: Build a boat from scratch in 4 hours, then race it off the waters of Kil-pah-las Beach in Cowichan Bay
  • When: Sunday, June 18, 2017
  • Where: Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre
  • Why: What better way to kick-off the summer. It’s fun, it’s crazy, and your family, friends and co-workers will remember ‘that boat you built’ for years to come.

    Entry Fee: $50 plus a maximum of $100 in building materials
    *The winning team receives 50% of all registration fees.

    Rules:
  • Non-powered hand tools ONLY
  • No pre-cut/ shaped panels, transoms, molds or bulkheads
  • No pre-assembly
  • Two team members must be onboard during the water race
  • The water race will have two parts: a rowing/ paddling leg followed by a sailing leg
